Graniteville, SC, is located in the western portion of South Carolina, approximately five miles west of Aiken. Graniteville itself is a small, census-designated place, but it is considered part of the greater Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). Graniteville was established in 1845, as a location for one of the southern US’s first cotton mills. The cotton mill includes homes, schools, and churches for the families working at the mill. According to sources, the reason the area gained its name is that many of the buildings were built from blue granite. In honor of the legacy of William Gregg, who initially founded the cotton mill, the Gregg-Graniteville Foundation was established in 1941.
In more recent history, Graniteville was the central office location for multiple textile plants located throughout South Carolina and Georgia. The plants were bought by Avondale Mills, a large denim manufacturer, who operated them until their closure an 2006 following a major train accident in 2005 that killed nine and injured more than 500. Graniteville is currently home to a number of large and small businesses, including a Bridgestone-Firestone location. Residents of Graniteville may work locally or commute regionally to one of the area’s larger cities, including Aiken or Columbia, SC, or Augusta, GA.
